I Love This Course!
Davis Love III redesigned the Greensboro, NC, Forest Oaks course three years ago, but until now any inside information he might've picked up didn't seem to help. He missed the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro cut in 2003 and 2004 and withdrew last year.
Now it’s finally paid off for 42-year-old the Charlotte native, who won his second Chrysler Classic of Greensboro title on his Forest Oaks course Sunday. Love shot three straight birdies late in the round to seal the win, a 16-under 272 that earned him $900,000. The two-stroke victory over Jason Bohn was his nineteenth on the PGA Tour and his first since 2003.
He began the final round sharing the lead at 10-under. He opened with two birdies and overcame his lone bogey of the day—on the par-4 seventh—with birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15.
Love was enthusiastic about finally breaking his streak. "I'll always remember this one because it's like starting over again," he said.
Jason Bohn (66) finished second two strokes back at 14-under; Eric Axley (67) and Steve Flesch (68) finished third and fourth respectively.
Bohn started the day at 8-under and had six birdies during his final round, including two straight on numbers 13 and 14 to move to 14-under. He closed with four straight pars, but it was still his best finish of the year.
Axley had a three-stroke lead at 15-under with five holes to play, but made two late bogeys—one on the par-4 fourteenth when he hit his tee shot into the trees, and another on the par-3 seventeenth when he missed an 8-foot par putt.
