"No thinking," reads a sign at Miracle Manor, the Palm Springs, California, motel redesigned by April Greiman and partner Michael Rotondi.
"If thinking, think nothing."
This whimsical directive underscores the work of Greiman, who has established a reputation as a graphic designer who defies conventions, asking the viewer to shed preconceptions of what graphic design is.
Greiman, a pioneer in the use of computers as a design tool, is active not only in graphic design but also in the environmental, motion, and interactive fields.
In addition, she has gained notice for her collaborations with architectural firms such as Morphosis and Barton Myers.
An instructor at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Greiman has taught at a number of other institutions, including SCI-Arc, and has served as director of the visual communications program at CalArts.
Her work has been featured in a number of books and exhibitions, including a traveling exposition mounted by the United States Information Agency in the former Soviet Union.
Her numerous awards and fellowships include an AIGA medal and a Hallmark Fellowship.
Greiman's work continues to cross disciplines, ranging from a 1995 commission for a U.S. commemorative stamp to creating web sites and interactive projects for clients such as U.S. West.
In 1998 Greiman was awarded the commission for an international exposition entitled "Inventing Flight," to be held in 2003.
