After the sketch selection phase and preliminary packaging studies, designers use Alias Studio software to explore initial form development in 3D. They begin this process by developing mathematical curves which are evaluated for smoothness, continuity and stance. Adjustments are made to each curve before being combined to create the exterior shell. This shell can be used to evaluate size and proportion of the vehicle.
Often the exterior is transferred to Alias StudioPaint (a 2D/3D paint product) to allow the designer to render various lamps, window openings, grille textures and other details that add realism to the image.
The final image is then rendered with lighting effects in customized environments. It is then viewed on a large screen projection system and evaluated at full scale.
