Hybrid 101

Get up to speed on plug-in hybrid and electrified driving with this handy guide and be on your way to finding the perfect family vehicle.

The Wide World of Powertrains

When it comes to power, there are four basic kinds of vehicles currently on the market: an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Electric Vehicle (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid, for example, is a PHEV which uses a combination of battery-powered electric motor and gas-powered hybrid engine. Each of the four commonly available powertrains offers unique advantages depending on a driver’s needs and lifestyle. Know the difference and shop with confidence.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE (ICE)

Most automobiles use gasoline to power an internal combustion engine (ICE). These all-gas vehicles are usually the least expensive to buy, but they can be more expensive to maintain and to fuel. ICE powertrains also create more tailpipe emissions than hybrid or electric vehicles.

HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (HEV)

Hybrids or HEVs use both gas and electric power. With help from a gasoline engine and regenerative braking, the battery stays charged up while driving. Hybrids get better fuel economy than non-hybrid gas-only vehicles, but they can’t be plugged in or drive on electricity alone.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV)

Thanks to having a larger battery than HEVs, EVs can drive without any gas or tailpipe emissions. They usually cost less to fuel and maintain due to relatively high petroleum prices and few components under the hood. Charging can take some time, so it’s necessary to plan routes ahead of travel to know where to charge along the way.

PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (PHEV)

Plug-in hybrids use the best features from all powertrain options. They operate like HEVs, but they’re more flexible because they allow you to plug in and run purely on electric if desired. A fully charged Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid gets a 32-mile all-electric driving range before switching to a gas-powered hybrid powertrain while still achieving better range and efficiency than a regular gas vehicle.

MPGe Explained

Fuel efficiency is measured differently for vehicles running on non-liquid fuels like battery power. MPGe, or miles per gallon equivalent, compares the amount of energy a gas-only vehicle uses to travel one mile with the amount of energy an electric vehicle uses to travel the same distance. For example, since one gallon of gas is equivalent to 33.7 kilowatt hours (kwh) of electricity and the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid gets 82 MPGe, it uses 33.7 kwh of electricity to travel 82 miles.

Tap into Electricity

Look around and you’ll notice that more and more charging stations are being added to public parking lots around the country. More charging options paired with a manufacturer’s estimated 32-mile all-electric range in the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid means you can run errands and pick up the kids without spending anything on gas. For those longer treks, an impressive manufacturer’s estimated 520 total mile range has got you covered. And for families who aren’t sure a totally electric vehicle is for them, the Plug-in Hybrid is a great way to explore what electrification has to offer before committing entirely.
